Water is the elixir and energy of life. As a key resource for human civilization, for human life, for our economy and agriculture, for every aspect of our existence, water and its conservation have inevitably had a central place in the Indian ethos, and customs and culture.
The Ministry of Jal Shakti was formed on 30th May 2019 to handle all aspects of water holistically. It brought various Departments and Ministries, broadly dealing with water resources and water supply, under a single umbrella. Demand and supply, quality and access – water in all its manifestations are finally being treated as a composite whole.
The inception of the Ministry of Jal Shakti has completed one year. Several initiatives have been taken up to ensure water security for faster socio-economic development of the country in the past year. These efforts have brought focus on water governance.
For robust water governance, besides the legal and policy framework, the Ministry of Jal Shakti has a well-charted institutional network in place. It has several agencies, institutions and autonomous bodies to work on several water-related issues coherently. There are currently two attached offices, seven subordinate offices and 12 autonomous bodies functioning under the aegis of the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
