MINISTER OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT, HOUSING & URBAN POVERTY ALLEVIATION AND PARLIAMENTARY AFFAIRS
" Nothing could perhaps be a more befitting tribute to our Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhiji, than to ensure a Swachh Bharat or Clean India by 2019, when the nation marks his 150th Birth Anniversary. This is a collaborative task of all Indians every citizen owes a duty to nation in this regard and every individual has his bit, small or big to contribute for the cause.
The Union Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi launched in October 2014 `Swachh Bharat Mission to realize by 2019, the dream of Gandhiji of Clean India. The Mission seeks to eliminate open defecation and manual scavenging besides promoting modern and scientific Municipal Solid Waste Management and realizing behavioral changes regarding health sanitation practices.
The adverse consequences of poor sanitation have been well documented. About 80% of the diseases are caused by lack of hygiene. The poor are the worst sufferers of lack of sanitation. It is the attitudinal change in every individual that is required and `awareness about the importance of sanitation holds the key in changing the mindsets of people. Any effort in this direction by an individual, a group or an association is welcome and well appreciated.
I am happy to note India Sanitation Coalition is going to be launched on 25th June, 2015. I trust the Coalition will be a useful partner in realizing the Mission's objective and supplementing government's initiatives. Mrs Naina Lal Kidwai being at the helm of affairs as the Chair of the Coalition, I am confident of its positive contribution towards securing a Clean India. My best compliments go to her and her team. "
